Music is an important part of Student Soul life. But it’s fair to say it’s not the absolute center of who we are!
Pretty much every Sunday night we have music led by a band of some configuration, and we sing together. (It doesn’t matter if you’re not confident singing, it’s a pretty relaxed and safe environment, you’ll be well led by our team, and you’re also completely free to just sit and enjoy the music if you don’t feel like belting it out.)
Our goal for these moments of music are to create music experiences of high quality that allow people to think, feel, participate, relax and enjoy the environment of worship and belonging that we’re aiming to create. Providing good quality music in our book is an act of hospitality.
On the other hand, it can be a lot of work to continually be pushing forward and developing a music ministry, and we want to be realistic about what we ask of those students who participate in our ministry environments, so we try to keep it real as well. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be good. So that’s a little taste of our philosophy around music.
There is so much more to say about worship. It is the orienting of your whole life toward God. Our truest purpose and destiny is to worship God. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we approach God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. This frames and sets up the worship that we participate in when we get together.
(Here’s a Spotify playlist that has some of the songs we’ve sung or at least listened over the year or so if you want to check it out.)
